Over the last decade, the UK's homeless population has risen to an estimated 320,000 people, and the coronavirus pandemic means they're more vulnerable than ever. While not all of the country's homeless people are living on the streets, those who do are more likely to suffer from respiratory conditions or other illness and are far less likely to be able to practice self-isolation and social distancing.
On March 23rd, prime minister Boris Johnson announced that the UK would go into lockdown, ordering all but essential workers to stay at home, except for 1 hour of exercise a day. But this isn't possible for everyone. With the country ordered to remain at home, what do you do if you have no home? Or, if you rely on shelters to provide food and shelter?
In this interview, I talk to Jasmine Basran, the Policy & Public Affairs Manager from the homeless charity Crisis. We discuss homelessness in the UK, and whether the economic impact of coronavirus could lead to increased homelessness.
